Speed cameras are now active in Virginia highway work zones.
Virginia State Police has instituted a photo speed enforcement program to reduce the number of work zone speeding violations under Virginia Code § 46.2-882.1 while improving safety for highway workers, drivers, and passengers. The Work Zone Speed Safety program is built for safety and built for fairness.

When you see a work zone
- Slow down before the first cone — not after.
- Put the phone down. Distracted driving is a leading factor in work zone crashes.
- Don’t tailgate — vehicles ahead may need to suddenly stop.
- Expect the unexpected — speed limits, lanes, and surfaces change as projects progress Check 511.vdot.virginia.gov for active work zones before you travel.
What is the fine? Are points assessed against my driver’s license?
If your vehicle is detected traveling 10+ mph over the posted work zone speed limit, a citation will be mailed to the registered owner — reviewed and certified by the Virginia State Police. The fine doesn’t exceed $100, and it won’t appear on your driving record or affect your insurance.
